The Strokes - “The New Abnormal” (April 10, 2020)

Don’t sleep on The Strokes, they are still killing it and still keeping it fresh.

By Matt Davis

We revisited April’s “The New Abnormal” by The Strokes which was produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. You know them when you hear them. When you think of the band you automatically know the sound. “The New Abnormal” continues the legacy of solid productions from The Strokes. This newest release has that polish that only comes with years of development.

This album does not deviate from what you know of The Strokes but still maintains its freshness and mellow and surprisingly energetic uplifting vibe. “The New Abnormal” does not disappoint fans; new and old alike. It’s full of energy, melancholy vocals and catchy licks and hooks.

“The New Abnormal” keeps your toe tapping and your head bobbing. It’s the perfect album to kick off a long night, and once playing feels like I could drive straight to Barstow without taking my foot off the gas.

That said, this album is not without range; it doesn’t just hammer you with quick guitar licks and pulsing bass and drums. Tracks like “At the Door” will change the pace and lead you right through it with its smooth stripped down synth rhythm and leads. The next thing you know you catch yourself just staring and contemplating life as “Ode to the Mets” finishes off the album as you start it all over again.
