Okey Dokey - "Once Upon A Time" (October 23, 2020)

Okey Dokey created a fun adventure in pop that’s tinged with psychedelic, funk and a lot of help from their friends.

By Matt Davis

The album “Once Upon A Time” takes you on a journey through modern psychedelic pop with enveloping textures, interesting hooks and the sound of a musical community.

This album is a blast to listen to. It is fun from beginning to end. Featuring swirling tones, funk rhythms, soulful vocals, and plenty of textures and tones that can only be fully appreciated in stereo. Okey Dokey managed to make some spacey vibes and use sounds that scratching your head and wondering how they made it but manages to never lose touch with its soul and humanity.

Not only is this album sonically interesting, the groups take on producing this album is also extremely interesting. During the process of producing the album, Okey Dokey enlisted technical help from many other artist. Contributing to the mixes and overall sound of this album were members of The Shins, Grizzly Bear and My Morning Jacket. If these are the results of experimenting with open collaboration amongst a community of musicians, then I hope more artists take this approach.

This is definitely an album I’ll keep listening to over and over and I look forward to the next release.
