Muzz - “Muzz” (June 5, 2020)

Muzz is a “Muzz”st have…

By Steve Forrest

When I first read about a new supergroup consisting of Paul Banks (Interpol), Matt Barrick (The Walkmen), and Josh Kaufman (Bonny Light Horseman) my ears were itching to have a listen.

After all, these are some of my favourite bands of all time so how could it be anything less than amazing?

Well I wasn’t let down in the slightest once I hit play on their self titled 2020 LP “Muzz”

Straight away, the album kicks in with enough elegant spaciousness that you could park a jumbo jet and still have room to spare. Plus, you are reminded instantly of these threes unique takes on music from previous works, so the album already feels like a worn in pair of jeans.

Simplistic and moody, this album is pretty consistent throughout and will lead you on a sleepy journey down the road of indie succulence that leaves you needing a splash of cold water on your face to shake you awake from dreamland and back into the real world.

However, I will admit that towards the end of this album the vocal stylings of Paul Banks did begin to get a bit repetitive and musically, it’s pretty linear.

Still, it is a valiant effort from these three and I am eager to hear more from this group.

A definite must have for the indie record lover.
