Ray LaMontagne – “MONOVISION” (June 26, 2020)

Ray LaMontagne plays it safe with “MONOVISION”.

By Steve Forrest

I’m not going to pretend that “MONOVISON”, Ray LaMontagne’s’ latest release is anything but a 10 out of 10. Its production is sound, the writing is solid and heartfelt, the lyrics are honest and relatable and of course the tunes are catchy. But for me personally, I don’t believe the writer takes many risks with his writing, and it leaves me feeling a bit bored with this release. It’s obvious that this record will certainly appeal to the masses, songs will be easily placed in television shows, ads, and movies, and it will no doubt make the artist and his label lots of money, but is it too safe? My feeling is yes.

As I listen to this album, I honestly cannot find a single flaw with it technically, and that’s kind of the problem. It doesn’t provoke any kind of profound thought, nor does it inspire me in any way.

The musical styles in which he sways in and out of is predominately Americana and Soul and have already been proven to work stylistically time and time again. LaMontagne wears his influences on his sleeves with “MONOVISION”, sighting such greats as John Denver, Joni Mitchell, Sam Cooke, and even a bit of Credence Clearwater Revival and although these influences are definitely great, there’s only a couple moments on this LP in which I actually feel as though I’m hearing LaMontagne’s true voice and style.

I’m not here to harp on the singer/songwriter or say that he isn’t extremely talented, I just prefer to be challenged a bit more by the music I enjoy and “MONOVISON” does not bring that to the table. You could put this album on in any situation, for any audience and it would be received with open arms.

So, if you’re in the market for a warm, safe Americana album with a bit of Soul, then “MONOVISION” is the one for you. If you prefer and album that takes a bit more risk with it’s artistic substance then maybe it’s not.

Either way, it’s still a solid album and I’m sure most of you out there will enjoy it.
