Fontaines D.C. - “A Hero’s Death” (July 31, 2020)

Fontaines D.C. avoid sophomore slump with “A Hero’s Death”

By Steve Forrest

Dublin’s own Fontaines D.C. have once again left me in awe as I sit here listening to their latest release “A Hero’s Death.”

Whilst I contemplate the state of our current world, and wonder if my feet are ever going feel like they’ve hit the ground again, I am swept away by thought provoking lyrics, steady driving rhythms, abstract guitar riffs, and a warm blanket of post punk nostalgia.

It’s difficult not to allow yourself to escape into abstract thought and feel as if you are soaring off into a land thats both familiar and unknown with the twists and turns this album has to offer. The collection of songs wrap around my soul and remind me that bands can still be creating catchy, original, and thought provoking music that sets them apart from the seemingly endless line up of programmed, mundane singers and groups that top the modern charts.

Much like the bands first release “Dogrel”, “A Hero’s Death” is all killer, no filler. Leaving zero time for you to question the Irish five piece’s motives or songwriting skills.

Everything in this album is authentic, raw, and showcases a lot of the same timelessness that groups like Joy Division, Nirvana, and The Velvet Underground welded with relative ease.

For anyone who is a fan of rainy day alternative rock, or just needs a solid injection of something different, I highly recommend this album.

Keep an eye on these boys, as I’m sure they are going to continue entertaining us for years to come.
