Andy Shauf – “The Neon Skyline” (January 24, 2020)

Andy Shauf gives us an easy ride with “The Neon Skyline”

By Steve Forrest

As soon as this album kicks in, I’m reminded of Paul Simons work in the best ways. The effortless delivery of creative vocal melodies, terrific storytelling, and a light almost whimsical musical arrangement within the songs that feels warm and comfortable right out of the gate.

Hailing from Saskatchewan, Andy Shauf first got his start playing drums for Christian pop punk band Captain but it’s obvious that this song writer/producer needed to take his talents to the next level and although “The Neon Skyline” is my first introduction to this artist, based off of this album alone I’m very much looking forward to diving headfirst into his earlier works.

This album has a very soft, almost earthy production. Simple arrangements, with close mic drums, and delicate vocal performances. It feels as if every instrument is being cradled in the musician’s arms, barely even being touched delivering a very deliberate and gentle sound.

This album is easy on the ears, and very interesting to listen to.

It stands on its own in a world of indie folk pop, and again for me I believe it’s the unique vocal delivery which conveys this the most for me.

“The Neon Skyline” is a fun listen. I would definitely recommend this album for any road trip or even to accompany you as you lay in a hammock on a warm spring day.
